Day 1 |
We commence our journey in Brisbane traveling through picturesque, rolling rural country to the shield volcano ranges of the Bunya Mountains NP enjoying walks in the Glasshouse Mountains NP and Bunya Mountains NP plus a leisurely lunch at a boutique winery in the peanut growing region of Kingaroy |
Day 2 |
Day walk in Bunya Mountains NP featuring the world’s finest stand of Bunya Pines, Hoop Pines, Strangler Figs and Grass Trees and a compelling insight into the Aboriginal history, feasting on the Bunya Nuts |
Day 3 |
We travel from the Bunya Mountains to Roma or Injune through rich grain and cotton growing areas enjoying feature heritage displays, abundant bird life, the unique Bottle Trees. |
Day 4 |
We travel from Roma / Injune to Carnarvon NP watching in anticipation as the great white escarpment emerges |
Day 5 |
A full day walk in Carnarvon Gorge with its many scenic creek crossings, feature side gorges and expansive Aboriginal Rock Art galleries, primitive ferns, inspiring amphitheater, bird and wildlife. |
Day 6 |
Today we travel from Carnarvon Gorge to Tambo along the historic Wilderness Way through the great central highlands, steeped in pastoral pioneering, explorer and bullock team pathways, early massacres resulting from the conflict between indigenous peoples and new settlers. |
Day 7 |
We leave Tambo for the outback Station of Avington, a typical remote working property which has seen both good times and challenges, through droughts and flooding rains. We’ll share some the realities of remote endeavor in the outback, historic rivers and waterholes important to inland wildlife and the subject of legends. |
Day 8 |
Early morning we travel the back roads from Avington Station to Longreach in time for a fascinating visit to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Outback Heritage Center, one of the finest national exhibits in Australia and paying tribute to the explorers, pioneers, stockmen and ringers, Aboriginal peoples and the women of the outback who helped to open up our vast country, The tyranny of distance challenges all but not so the isolated children and educators at the School of Long Distance Education where we hope to tune into the largest classroom in the world, live with a lesson in progress. A memorable experience. |
