LamasThis is a unique 5 day trek that covers the most important attractions of the mysterious Llanganates Mountains Range where, legend says, the fabulous Inca treasure is buried.  This is also one of the most untouched and beautiful areas you can find in Ecuador.  During the trek a llama will carry your camping equipment giving you the impression of having gone back to the 15th century.  On the way, typical villages, small lagoons, and rivers will be visited and you will admire incredible views of the Andean highlands.

DAY 1. QUITO – BAÑOS – POATO: Departure is early morning from Quito.  We will take the Pan-American Highway south through the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” to the small highland village of Poato (9,200’) where our local guides and llamas will be waiting.  After packing and securing our gear on the llamas, we start the trek ascending towards the East until we reach a place called Pucara (11,150’) where we will make a nice cozy camp for.  After lunch you will enjoy the surroundings and, weather permitting, magnificent views of volcanoes Tungurahua, Chimborazo (20,700’), and Carihuairazo.  The environment combined with the exhilarating vibration and unique energy of the Paramo will make an unforgettable experience.  Dinner will be served and overnight camping will be in tents.

DAY 2.  TREKKING ALONG THE INCA TREASURE TRAIL:  After an early 7:00 am breakfast, we will hike NE along the ancient trail.  With some luck, we might see a spectacular bear, deer or maybe a high altitude tapir.  We will go as far as Loma Gorda (12,795’).  Here we’ll have lunch enjoying a fantastic view of the mysterious Llanganates range and afterwards head back to camp along a different route through spots of high altitude rain forest.  We will arrive in camp in time for dinner and our overnight stay.

Breakfast is again served early after which. we break camp, pack our llamas, and begin our easterly trek towards the Culliguli lagoon (12,800’).  At this beautiful and remote part of the páramo we will lunch.  Early in the afternoon we resume our trek headiarea viewng towards the San Borja lagoon (12,800’) and Cerro Chisinal (12,500’).  Here we will make camp and if the weather cooperates, enjoy a striking view of the small Parroquia El Triunfo down below.  Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm and camping is overnight.

DAY 4. TREKKING ALONG THE INCA TREASURE TRAIL:  Breakfast is served at 7:00 am after which we break camp and pack the llamas.  Once ready we start our trek towards the Parroquia El Triunfo (8,530’), descending through dense and magnificent cloud forests until we reach the Aluleo River (8,530 ft).  Here, we might make a stop and try some trout fishing. After lunch we will arrive at El Triunfo where we make camp on the banks of the river with, weather permitting, a view of the volcano Tungurahua.  Dinner will be served at 6:00 pm and we will camp overnight listening to the sounds of the river.

DAY 5.  TRIUNFO - QUITO: Breakfast is again served at 7:00 am.  We break camp for the last time and say goodbye to the llamas.  Waiting will be a private vehicle that will transport us to Baños where we will lunch and enjoy this small town well known for its thermal springs.  At 4:00 pm we will embark in a private vehicle back to Quito and your hotel.
