Climbing Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, reaching a height of 5,895 meters, a dormant volcano, with the diameter at its base being 40 miles. There are two main snow capped peaks, Kibo and Mawenzi. Although it can be climbed year round the best times of the year for climbing are between August and October and January and March, from mid March to May it is the wet season. There are six different routes up the mountain ranging in degree of difficulty and there are mMount Kilimanjaroany tours operators running organized trips.

Marangu Route

Typical Itinerary: MARANGU ROUTE 6 DAYS

Day 1:    MARANGU GATE - MANDARA HUT
After breakfast drive to Marangu gate to start you climb.  After the registration you will walk through the rain forest, with our picnic lunch.  After 3 - 4 hrs walk you will reach Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight (2700m).

Day 2:    MANDARA HUT - HOROMBO HUT
After breakfast slowly slowly (Pole Pole) ascend to Horombo Hut, Through the moorland.  You will walk for 5 - 7 hrs before you reach Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight (3700m)

Day 3:    ACCLIMATIZATION (FULL DAY) 

Mount KilimanjaroDay 4:    HOROMBO HUT - KIBO HUT
After a goodnight rest, this morning you will continue with your trek, passing the cactus like gain ground, and the last water point.  After 5 - 6 hrs walk you will reach Kibo Hut for dinner and overnight (4700m)

Day 5:    KIBO HUT - UHURU PEAK
Early mid night you start you climb to the summit Uhuru peak via Gilman's point.  Your trek to Uhuru peak takes 5 - 7 hrs.  If you are lucky to reach Uhuru peak take Pictures for your life time memory and view the Sunrise.  Thereafter, descend slowly to Kibo Hut for lunch, then down to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: HOROMBO HUT - MARANGU GATE.
After breakfast slowly slowly descend to Marangu gate, where you will Meet your driver, drive back to the Hotel. If you intend to trek for 6 days Marangu route you will spend two nights at Horombo Hut for acclimatization.

The list of animals that you may see during Mt. Kili climbing are baboon, black and white Colobus monkey, blue monkey, buffalo, bush pig, bush back civet, eland, elephant, giraffe, honey badger, velvet monkey and if very lucky maybe a leopard.

Safari Itineraries:
Day 1: Arrival at the Airport transfer to Impala Hotel B/B.

Day 2:Arusha - Lake Manyara 130 kms (2 hr drive) Pick up from your hotel in Arusha and drive to Lake Manyara for lunch. After lunch and check in, drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Manyara is perhaps most famous for its tree-climbing lions, elephants and wealth of bird life including thousands or flamingoes. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight at Kiboko-Bushcamp.

Day 3:Manyara - Serengeti 210 km (4 hr drive)
After breakfast drive to Serengeti with box lunches through Ngorongoro Highland (2300m above Sea level) and the Malanja depression, an area of dry arid scrub land, with a chance to see giraffes. Game drives en-route, you will continue to Seronera W.Lodge for your dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Serengeti.
Whole day game drives at Serengeti National Park. Serengeti is Tanzania's largest and best known national park. Return to Seronera W.Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Serengeti - Ngorongoro 150 km (3 hr drive)
Today, you will have a half day tour in Serengeti National Park. After lunch at the lodge, visit Olduvai Gorge which is famous for its human and animal fossils. In 1959, Dr. Leakey discovered the skull of a hominid, Australopithecus Bosei, which dates back to 1.75 million years and is now at Dar Es Salaam National Museum. Since then, other significant archaeological finds have been unearthed in and around Olduvai including the footprints of the hominid, Australopithecus Afarensis, at Laetoli. At the gorge itself, there is a small museum and guide to explain the archaeological events and geography of the area. Proceed to Ngorongoro arriving in the evening. You will enjoy a panoramic view of the crater. Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro W.Lodge Warm clothes are suggested as temperature could be chilly at night.

Day 6: This morning you make the dramatic descent down the Lerai escarpment for a full day on the famous Ngorongoro crater floor. You will drive up to the Hippo pool site for a picnic lunch, Ngorongoro is the largest dry volcanic caldera in the world. The crater is the best place to see black rhino in their natural habitat and the regal black-maned lion. Other species encountered are wildebeest, zebra, spotted hyena and if one is lucky, leopard. Return late afternoon to your accommodation. Dinner and overnight at Ngorongoro W.Lodge.

Day 7: Ngorongoro - Arusha (190 km - 4 hrs)
After breakfast drive back to Arusha via Mto wa Mbu and visit Masai Boma overnight at Impala Hotel Bed and Breakfast.

Alternative Safari Itinerary:
Day 1: Breakfast then drive to Arusha National Park for Mt. Meru hiking, dinner and overnight at Momela lodge.

Day 2: Breakfast at the Lodge then full day game drive at Arusha N.Park. Late afternoon drive to Impala Hotel for overnight.

Day 3: Breakfast at the Lodge then full day game drive at Arusha N.Park. Late afternoon drive to Impala Hotel for overnight.

Day 4: After breakfast drive to Tarangire National Park. Lunch at Tarangire Lodge. After lunch game drive at Tarangire N.Park. Late evening drive to the lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Early morning game drive before breakfast. Breakfast, then full day game drive. Dinner and overnight at Tarangire Lodge.

Day 6: Morning game drive, then afternoon drive back to Impala Hotel overnight B/B.

Kilimanjaro climb and Safari

The itinerary is designed so that if you want to climb but your partner doesn't he/she will not be bored while waiting for you to join them afterwards. If you do not like to climb you will have two weeks of rich cultural experiences with incredible wild life experiences.

A).  MT. KILIMANJARO TREK ­ RONGAI ROUTE: Kilimanjaro crator

7 Nights/ 8 Days (additional climbing day is recommended)

Day 01:  Met on arrival at Kilimanjaro airport and driven to City of Arusha for overnight stay on bed and breakfast basis.

Day 02:  An early start with a drive from Arusha to Nalimoru Gate.  3 hours of trekking to the First Cave for overnight stay (2850m).

Day 03:  4 hours of Trekking to the Second Cave
(3930m).

Day 04:  Extra day spent to acclimatize.  Overnight at the Second Cave.

Day 05:  After a good night’s rest, trek past the last water point to reach Kibo saddle, a broad desert zone between the two peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi.  Kibo Hut (4725m) is reached in 5-6 hours.  Overnight.

Day 06: The start for the summit is made just after midnight.  The steepest part of the route is to Gillman’s point  (5700m) 5-6 hours.  A further one and a half hours walk to Uhuru Peak (5895m).  Then descend
to Horombo Hut Campsite (5-6).  Overnight.

elephantDay 07: The day is spent descending to the Marangu Gate.  Transfer to Arusha. Overnight stay at Ilboru Safari Lodge bed and breakfast basis.

Day 08: After breakfast free day in Arusha pm we will pick you up from your hotel drive to Kilimanjaro Int Airport for your flight back home. 

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED: Drinks, tips,  insurance, rent of any clothing/equipment, sleeping bag, personal toiletry requirements and all items of a personal nature.

WHAT IS INCLUDED: 2 Nights accommodation in Arusha (bed and breakfast based on 2 star hotel), Park, hut/camp  and rescue fees, experienced English speaking Guide, porters, tents, 3 meals a day whilst on trek, transfers to and from the mountain gates from and to Arusha, Complimentary Airport transfer.

B) OPTION for the non climbers (can be customized and altered)

Day 01:  Arusha  Marangu.
09:30am depart Arusha for Marangu.  Enjoy the pleasant walk around the Slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro visiting the Local farms, Park Gates and the water falls.  Lunch, dinner and overnight at the Marangu Hotel.

Day 02:  To Arusha National Park. After breakfast, depart for Arusha National Park scenic park offering 7soda lakes.  Game drive in the Park.  Lunch, dinner and overnight at the Momella Wildlife Lodge.

Day 03: Arusha National Park

Day 04: To Tarangire National Park
08:30hrs depart via Arusha for Tarangire National Park. This park offers wide panoramas of open acacia woodland and grass savanna, where huge herds of elephants (often two hundred strong) and other unique residents, such as fringe-eared oryx and lesser kudu roam free.  Game drive in the park with picnic
lunches.  Dinner and Overnight  at Tarangire Sopa Lodge.

Day 05:  Tarangire National Park
Another day in Tarangire with morning and afternoon game drives.  Lunch, dinner and overnight at the Tarangire Sopa Lodge. 

Day 06: Tarangire National Park

Day 07:  To Arusha.
Morning game drive in Tarangire.  After lunch return to Arusha.  Overnight at Ilboru (b/b)

Day 08: Free Day in Arusha

C) SAFARI EXTENSION

Day 01:   Arusha ­ Lake Manyara National Park 08:30hrs depart Arusha for Lake Manyara National Park, one of the most popular and attractive national parks. For a relatively small area in size, it contains a variety of habitat and diverse animals and birds. Lake Manyara is famed for its tree-climbing lions and numerous migratory birds. We will enjoy game viewing within the northern part of the park.   Dinner and Overnight  at Lake Manyara Hotel.

Day 02:  Olduvai Gorge ­ Serengeti National  Park. This morning we drive via Ngorongoro Conservation Area. From here the route follows along the crater rim, passing Malanja Depression towards Olduvai Gorge. This desert like gorge lies at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands and is world-renowned site as a repository for the remains of vast numbers of animals that roamed these plains eons ago. We will visit the museum featuring the famous Zinj skull, the Zinjanthropus man of 1.8 million years ago, whose remains were found here by Dr. Leakey. After picnic lunch we are ready to enter to the Serengeti National
Park and drive toward Seronera River Valley. If time permits we may have a late afternoon game drive.
Overnight stay and Dinner at the Seronera Wildlife Lodge.

Days 03 + 04 + 05:  Serengeti National Park.  Serengeti is as big as Northern Ireland. It is the greatest sanctuary in the world, fantastic in its natural beauty and unequaled in its scientific value. Serengeti contains about 4 million different types of animals including the big five; rhino, leopard, buffalo, lion and the elephant.  You have a full day in Serengeti with morning and afternoon game drives. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Seronera Wildlife Lodge.

Day 06:    Serengeti - Ngorongoro
Morning game drive in  Serengeti.  With picnic lunches head off via Simba Kopjes, Naabi Hill Gate to drive towards Ngorongoro. We will stop on the crater rim to enjoy one of the most memorable picnic lunches in your life. The view from the rim is stupendous and you can admire this masterpiece of mother  nature. This oval shape 300 sq.km in area and 610 m deep crater is a repository of Africa’s finest wildlife. All the Big Five are present living a privileged existence on the crater floor, and so placid you can move right among them.   Dinner and overnight at  Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge.

Day 07:   Ngorongoro Crater ­ Arusha.
After breakfast, descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a Crater tour.  After lunch return to Arusha.
